Getting Your Pets Cage Ready for Arival

Before you bring you'r hamster home, you have to make sure you got all the things that are needed including:

  • cage ( set up & ready )
  • accessories for the cage such as a feeding bowl, drinking bottle, any toys and other pleasures
  • make sure that the food is in the feeding bowl and water is in the drinking bottle for when your hamster arrives.
  • the wood-shavings are scattered on the bottom of your hamster's cage
  • and just check if everything is in place and order.
The mistake I did when I bought my hamster is that I bought my cage and went straight to buy my hamster, so I forgot to sent up the cage......

Housing

Hamsters are used to being in large, open spaces so need a good, secure, but roomy housing. The most important thing to remember when buying a hamster's cage is that a hamster's home can never be too big- they love to explore and exercise. Multi level cages are a good idea as the add interest to the hamster's environment- but be careful with plastic tubes as some are too small and a Syrian hamster can easily get stuck in them. The hamster's home must always have a place for your hamster to rest and hide, and another area for play, exercise and feeding.

Your hamster's housing should be away from direct sunlight and draughts, away from constant noise (IE: a freezer ). Hamsters also have sensitive hearing so they should be never placed near a television, CD player, HI-FI, etc.

Cages Hygiene

Cages should be cleaned out on a regular basis, maybe once or twice a week. In the warmer weather hamsters cages should be cleaned more often to prevent flies being attracted to the cage, as this may result in an infestation of maggots ( and I'm sure you wouldn't want that! ). Did you know that hamsters can catch nasty diseases from dirty cages? So make sure you pay lots of attention to keeping your hamster's cage clean and hygienic.

Here are some helpful tips to point you in the right direction:

  • every day remove any soiled bedding ( if you are not sure what it is, hint, it's where your hamsters does it's toilet business.
  • every week remove all wood-shavings and soiled bedding. rinse the bottom of the cage with warm water and mild detergent. The replace with clean bedding and wood-shavings.
